The Do No Harm Principle
At the core of our approach is the Do No Harm principle, originally developed in humanitarian contexts and now essential to ethical development practice.
This means we continuously assess the potential negative impacts of our programs on host communities, local economies, and cultural practices. When risks are identified, we modify or discontinue activities rather than proceed at the expense of community wellbeing. We recognize that well-intentioned programs can cause harm through dependency creation, cultural disruption, or displacement of local workers. Our program design actively works to prevent these outcomes.
Key Questions We Ask:
-
Does this placement serve a genuine community-identified need?
-
Could a local person be doing this work instead?
-
What power dynamics are present and how do we address them?
-
Who benefits most from this arrangement?
-
What happens when the intern leaves?
Guiding Principles
Our Ethical Framework
These principles guide every aspect of our program design, implementation, and evaluation.

Do No Harm
All programs are designed to avoid negative impacts on host communities. We prioritize community wellbeing over program objectives and continuously assess potential risks.

Community-Informed Placements
Host organizations and communities are active partners in defining internship roles. Placements respond to locally-identified needs, not external assumptions about what communities “need.”

Local Leadership
Community members and local professionals lead program implementation. International interns work alongside—not in place of—local expertise and leadership.

Transparency & Accountability
We maintain open communication with all stakeholders about program goals, funding, and outcomes. Regular feedback mechanisms ensure accountability to both interns and communities.

Non-Extractive Engagement
Research and data collected during internships belong to communities. We ensure that knowledge generated serves local needs and respects intellectual property rights.

Safeguarding Standards
Comprehensive protocols protect both interns and community members, particularly children and vulnerable populations. All participants undergo safeguarding training.
Protection Protocols
Safeguarding Standards
We maintain comprehensive safeguarding protocols that protect both interns and community members. These standards are non-negotiable and apply to all program activities.
Safeguarding is especially critical in placements involving children, vulnerable adults, or sensitive community settings. We provide specific training and protocols for these contexts.
